ARED stands for Associates in Research and Education for Development (ARED).

The choice of English is related to the parentage of the institution, which is an NGO under American law.

ARED's mission is to promote quality education in African languages, for grassroots communities, through training, publishing, pedagogical innovations and action research. To this end, ARED develops participatory education programmes that enable individuals and local communities to make informed choices. ARED conducts action research activities.

Associates in Research and Education for Development (ARED) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1990 by the late Linguist Sonja Fagerberg-Diallo.
ARED intervenes mainly on pulaar and wolof. His publications are published mainly in the six national languages of Senegal: Pulaar, Wolof, Seereer, Mandinka, Sooninké and Joola.
ARED works in partnership with the State, international development agencies, local associations, local and international NGOs. ARED also works with government divisions in Senegal and the sub-region such as Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Benin, Guinea and Chad.
Yes, ARED has been working with the Ministry of National Education since 2009. ARED works in particular with the Direction de l'Enseignement élémentaire (DEE).
ARED operates in two (2) areas:
  • The search for quality in education through action research and the provision of responses to the demand to improve students' performance in reading/writing and mathematics.
  • The promotion of quality non-formal education to give communities more opportunities through capacity building in areas directly affecting their daily lives and likely to lead to inclusive economic social changes at the community level.

To this end, ARED offers participatory education programmes enabling individuals and local communities to make informed choices.
